This program is hosted by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture with co-sponsors Banneker-Douglass Museum and DC Public Library.
Participants learn to take the first step in assembling story-telling quilts by creating their own quilt squares using personal images and text. The workshop is led by documentary quilt maker Joan M. E. Gaither of the Maryland Institute College of Art. Prior quilting experience is not required. Participants are invited to bring personal photos to scan onto their quilt squares.

The Black Watermen of the Chesapeake Quilt tells the stories of this unique Maryland community including images and references to Maryland’s maritime history, several notable African American watermen, and the many African American men and women involved in Maryland’s maritime industry.

Homage to Ed and Sylvia Brown: Baltimore Album Quilt
Celebrating the generous philanthropic contributions of Ed & Sylvia Brown to the cultural institutions in Baltimore City, the Brown's quilt is a 25-quilt square format with each square representing an aspect of the Browns' gifts, philosphy, or heritage.
